Apple today introduced the new iPod U2 Special Edition, U2 and Universal Music Group. The new U2 iPod is based on the fifth generation 30GB iPod and holds up to 7,500 songs, 25,000 photos or over 75 hours of video and features a distinctive, all-black stainless steel enclosure, red Click Wheel and custom engraving of U2 band member signatures. U2 iPod customers will also receive 30 minutes of exclusive U2 video downloadable from the iTunes Music Store. “We’re thrilled to continue working with one of the greatest bands in the world to bring U2 fans a special edition of the world’s best digital music player,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s vice president of worldwide iPod Product Marketing.
Apple iPod U2 - iTunes Music Store
“With its distinctive new design, including an all-black stainless steel enclosure, the new U2 iPod is sure to be a hit.” Featuring seamless integration with the iTunes Music Store and the iTunes digital music jukebox, the new U2 iPod features Apple’s patent pending Auto-Sync technology that automatically downloads digital music, podcasts, photos, audiobooks, home movies, music videos and popular television shows onto the iPod and keeps them up-to-date whenever the iPod is plugged into a Mac or Windows computer using USB 2.0. The new U2 iPod features up to 14 hours of battery life for music playback.
The audio files that iPod (mp3/mp4 player) supports are MP3, AAC/M4A, Protected AAC, AIFF, WAV, Audible audiobook, and Apple Lossless audio file formats. MIDI and WMA files can be played only after a convertor accomplishes conversion, for non-Digital Rights Management (DRM). Ogg Vorbis, FLAC, and other open-source audio formats are not supported at all.
Apple wanted an extremely user friendly interface and thus adopted the minimalist interface, which features only five essential buttons, namely, Menu (to access functions and to toggle the backlight); Center (for menu item selection); Play/ Pause (this also works as an off switch when held for few seconds); Skip Forward/ Fast Forward; and Skip Backwards/ Fast Reverse. An additional Hold button is provided for accidental button pressing prevention, and it can reset the iPod if it has frozen or crashed. Functions such as volume control, scrolling are handled by the usage of the rotational click wheel. Later models have some minor changes in the functions of the buttons but overall the number of buttons has remained at five.
To market this path-breaking mp3/mp4 player, they needed a suitable futuristic name and so they hired a freelance copywriter, Vinnie Chieco, and other writers to give a name. Inspired by the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey and the dialogue "Open the pod bay door, Hal!" with reference to the context of the Discovery One spaceship and its white EVA Pods, Vinnie Chieco proposed the name of the product as iPod. The management of Apple accepted the proposed name and on 23 October 2001, the iPod was officially launched. The rest they say is history.
To enable customers to access songs of their choice, Apple opened up an online media store the iTunes Store on 29 April 2003, where individual songs could be downloaded at prices less than a U.S. dollar per song. The purchased songs can be played only on iPods. Subsequent versions of this iPod (mp3 / mp4 player) also featured video capabilities, and thus iTunes Store started selling short videos from 12 October 2005. From 12 September 2006, full-length movies were also available at the iTunes Store.
iPods have come a long way from their inception, and now the latest fifth generation iPods possess multimedia capabilities and are available in both Mac OS and Windows OS versions. Usually, if a new iPod is plugged into a Mac OS computer, then the hard disk of this mp3 / mp4 player is formatted as per the HFS+ file format, and if it plugged into a Windows OS computer, it is formatted as per the FAT32 file format. From being a digital music player, the iPod has now transformed into a digital media player. For a music junkie like me, listening to tunes at work is not unusual. Listening on a portable device is. If this were a Discman or a regular MP3 player, I would be fretting right now about how much battery power I was wasting, and I would certainly have to hunt for another album before I reached the end of this page. But this tiny beauty, known as an iPod, has put 12 hours of juice and 1,200 tunes at my fingertips, which means I can go get groceries, clean the house, work out, cook dinner, finish a novel and go to bed without thinking of taking the headphones off.
After an early-morning recharge, I can start over.Apple excels at this kind of so-simple-it’s-brilliant stuff. Steve Jobs may be a few years late to the MP3-player race, but with iPod he has shot into the lead. No one else has this much storage in a package this small. Never has digital music been this well organized. The trackwheel on the front scolls quickly and precisely through all your songs, arranged by title or by artist, and the display is crisp and readable. When I gave the iPod to my techno-suspicious parents, they figured out how to select and play in under a minute. Why can’t all gadgets be like that?
If you are part of the PC-owning majority, however, you’re out of luck — for now. Jobs has not ruled out producing Windows-compatible versions of iPod, but making tools for operating systems other than his own has never been his style. Better to hope iPod shakes up the MP3 industry the way the iMac shook up the makers of boxy beige PCs.
Meanwhile, there are more than enough Mac users in the world for Apple to make out like a bandit this holiday season. There really are no downsides to the iPod other than its relatively weighty price tag. It would be nice to see that lowered soon, although the Mac universe is an expensive place to begin with. If price does turn out to be no object, expect Jobs to capitalize on his “digital hub” strategy with a few more Apple-only peripherals: the iCamera, perhaps, or the iOrganizer. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have some Beatles-inspired housework I need to get to.

Samsung unveiled another dual SIM mobile phone, Samsung W599 (or Samsung SCH-W599), which will first be launched in China. The SCH-W599 supports both 800MHz CDMA and GSM carrier networks as well as boasting dual GSM SIM card use simultaneously.
The South Korean company seems to give a special attention to dual SIM devices, as these are currently very popular in Asia and they could also become “wanted” in Europe and the US.
The new W599 is a candybar form cell phone, and its navigation keys are interestingly integrated as to form a circle. The phone does not have a hardware keypad, hence most of the data input is made through its 2.4 inch touchscreen display with 260K colors, a QVGA (240 x 320) resolution and handwriting recognition.
Besides, this handset sports 2 megapixel camera, FM radio and Bluetooth, email, Instant Messaging, Wap browser, embedded games, 34MB of internal memory and microSD card support for several extra GBs. The phone measures 103.1 x 53 x 16.4 millimeters and includes a 1200 mAh Li-Ion battery that should provide a decent talk-time / stand-by time.
The W599 will be available in China for 4,490 yuan (approximately $650) and like other Samsung’s phones in Asia, it will be branded “Anycall†(which you can see in the above photos).
Though its design is one of the star attractions on the Samsung MM-A900, this phone has a lot of brains behind the beauty. Measuring a little more than a half-inch thick, the Samsung MM-A900 (SPH-A900) mobile sports a sophisticated design. The Samsung SPH-A900 cell phone is a slim clamshell dual-band CDMA phone. The Samsung MM-A900 cell phone is the perfect blend of fashion and function. This ultra-thin clamshell CDMA phone is Samsung’s answer to the RAZR.

Is it a CDMA Phone? Is it a GSM Phone? Hey It’s Both! We are talking about the new and very chic Samsung SCH-W579. This one is already creating buzz as it lets the insatiable user experience the best of both worlds and prevents the headache of carrying two different devices.Though supporting both networks is nothing new, however the handset also has some great multimedia features and scores points in the eye-candy department.
The Samsung SCH-W579 has already been approved by the FCC, so be ready to experience its goodness soon. On the specs front apart from both GSM and CDMA networking, we also come across features like ; TFT, 240x320 pixels, 262K colors display, a 2megapixel CMOS Camera, a MP3 Player and support to 72-tones polyphony. We especially dig the cool digital clock on the outer body and its ability to support Office documents and TV-out. No word on pricing or availability.
Normally most concerned with its native Korea and the West, Samsung is introducing a world phone made for the often complex Chinese market. The combination of dual-band CDMA and tri-band GSM gives cellphone subscribers the ability to use networks in other countries without buying another handset. This clamshell design also caters to its Chinese target audience by including a 240x320 touchscreen and stylus to allow text messaging in the users' own tongues. A 2-megapixel camera, Bluetooth, and built-in music playback are expected to complete the W579's feature set. No official release information has been listed, but Samsung promises to deliver the phone soon. A full photo is available after the jump courtesy of IT-168.
